Post Interview Thank You Letter - Thank You Note After Interview
By Alan Leach
Believe it or not, a thank you letter after the interview can make the difference between getting the job of your dreams or being kicked to the kerb. Job applicants may spend literally weeks researching the company they want to work for, fine-tuning that resume, and working on clever ripostes to tricky interview question but ultimately fail because they could not be bothered spending just a few minutes to write and send a post interview thank you letter.
The job market is so competitive these days, and it is often little differences that decide who gets the position, and a post interview thank you letter is a good example of this. Failure to send a post interview thank you letter does not necessarily mean you will not get the job, but why take the chance? Writing a post interview thank you letter will do your cause no harm at all, and more than likely it will help you.
The post interview thank you letter should be sent within four days of the interview, though if possible the day after the interview for preference. You can imagine the frustration of someone who waits till four days after the interview to write the thank you note only to find out before they get a chance to send it that the post went to someone else.
A post interview thank you letter should be seen as an opportunity rather than a chore. It is an opportunity not only to thank the interviewer (or interviewers) but also a chance to reiterate the qualities you have that make you perfect for the post, or to mention something that you forgot to mention in the original interview.
A post interview thank you letter also demonstrates you understand basic business etiquette, as a short letter after someone has given up their time to see you is a common occurrence in the business world, and showing evidence that you understand this at the interview stage will certainly work in your favour.
Any sample letter after the interview also gives you a chance to comment on what you thought about the company following your visit there and of course to emphasize your compatibility for the post.
Of course, one key reason for writing the thank you note after the interview is to put your application back in the interviewer's mind. It might well be the case that a few days after your interviewer the final decision is being made, which makes a timely thank you note from you a very effective weapon in your battle to get appointed.
We have looked at a number of important reasons why a post interview thank you letter or note should be written, and briefly touched on some of the information that should go into this letter, but it should be emphasized at this stage that in some rare cases a post interview thank you note could actually harm your application. This is when you write a thank you note that is overly long or one that contains errors.
As with all business letters, care should be taken to make sure the post interview note is as brief as possible. This is a basic business skill and those people who have to deal with mountains of correspondence will appreciate the courtesy of a short note. Any sample letter after the interview you see will show how brief most of these notes are.
What is more, it should go without saying that basic inaccuracies will not be looked upon with favour.
A thank you letter after the interview as we have seen is a vital tool to employ for all applicants. While there is no substitute for a strong resume and sound interview skills, all things being equal the post could very well go to someone that has taken the extra effort to write and send a thank you note after the interview.
